Privacy
This is a plain-language summary of how The Cabin Class handles your information. It is short because there isn't much to tell.
What we collect
If you sign up for our newsletter, we collect the email address you give us, along with the page you signed up from. We don't ask for your name, your address, or any other detail unless you choose to write to us directly. Once the letter is running, we also measure the standard things any newsletter does — whether an email was opened and whether a link in it was clicked — through Buttondown, so we can tell what readers find useful.
Suggestions
If you suggest a train or ship, we store what you type in the form: train or ship, its name, its operator, and the cabin, link and email address if you give them, with the time it arrived. We use it only to research the suggestion, and the email only to tell you if we list it. The suggestion is kept with our host, Cloudflare, for 180 days and then deleted automatically. When we take it up, the name of the train or ship, the operator and any cabin or link go into our research notes; your email never does. We don’t store your IP address: Cloudflare counts requests per connection for a minute or so to stop floods of automated submissions.
Your currency
On pages with fares, we remember the currency you choose for approximate conversions in your browser’s local storage. To suggest one before you choose, our host, Cloudflare, tells our site which country your connection comes from, and we keep that two-letter country code in a cookie for 30 days. Neither holds anything that identifies you, and neither is shared with anyone.
“Check prices” clicks
When you follow a “Check prices” link, it passes through our own address on the way to the operator or booking partner. We log that click with our host, Cloudflare: which train or ship and cabin it was, which partner, whether it was a train, river or expedition listing, the page on our site you clicked from, the country your connection comes from, and the time. We don’t log your IP address, set a cookie or record anything else about your browser, so a click can’t be traced back to you. Cloudflare keeps these logs for three months. We use them to see which listings and partners readers find useful (some partners pay us a commission when you book: see Disclosures).
Our site’s code also writes short technical logs of its own work, such as a failed newsletter signup, to find errors. They don’t include your IP address or your email address, and Cloudflare deletes them within a week.
Affiliate links
The site contains affiliate links: if you book through one, the agent or operator may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra (see Disclosures). Every page loads a script from Travelpayouts, a third-party affiliate service, which may set cookies in your browser to track referrals from our links so that a booking can be credited to us. Travelpayouts handles that data under its own terms.
Visit counts
We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies and doesn’t follow you across sites. It tells us which pages are read, roughly where readers are, which site sent them and how quickly pages load, as totals, not as a record of any one person.
Google Analytics, only if you agree
We ask before using Google Analytics. Until you press Accept, it isn’t loaded at all and no Google cookie is set. If you accept, Google Analytics sets its cookies and tells us which pages you view, how you arrived, your approximate location and device type, and a few actions: following a “Check prices” link, signing up for the newsletter, changing the currency for approximate prices, and sending a suggestion. It never receives your email address or what you type in a form. We don’t use it for advertising, and advertising features stay switched off.
Your choice is kept in your browser’s local storage (as cc-consent).
Change it at any time with “Cookie choices” at the foot of every page; if you
decline after accepting, we stop sending data and remove Google’s cookies from our
site. Google’s own privacy policy
covers how it handles the data.
What we don't do
Apart from the Travelpayouts affiliate script above, we don't run advertising trackers or retargeting pixels, and we use no analytics cookies unless you accept them. We don't sell or rent your email address to anyone.
Who processes your data
We use Buttondown to send our newsletter and store subscriber email addresses. Their privacy policy governs how they handle that data on our behalf. Our host, Cloudflare, serves the site and stores suggestions and click logs on our behalf, and runs our visit counts. Travelpayouts tracks referrals from our affiliate links. If you accept analytics cookies, Google processes your visit for us under its own terms.
