The review

First Class buys a 2+1 layout, so couples can take a table for two and solo travellers can have a seat to themselves, which matters on an eight-hour journey. Meals are still paid for separately, and the windows and views are the same as in Second Class. At CHF 338 full fare it is good for travellers who want their own table without paying for Excellence Class, and it is the class with the train's wheelchair compartment and accessible toilet.

For

  • Two-seat tables for couples and single seats for solo travellers
  • Wheelchair compartment and accessible toilet in this section, with a mobile lift and staff help to board
  • Quieter carriages with fewer seats than Second Class

Against

  • Meals and drinks are extra, as in Second Class
  • CHF 118 more than Second Class at full fare for the same views
  • Large cases go on racks at the carriage ends, and only one extra bag is advised
