The review

A private pod for one person at roughly couchette prices, and Seat61 rates it the main innovation of the new trains. It suits a solo traveller who values a door of their own over space: the pod is about 58 cm wide, the toilets are down the corridor and breakfast is a roll with jam. Couples and anyone wanting room to move about should look at the sleepers.

For

  • Private, lockable space for a solo traveller without paying for a whole sleeper
  • Locker beside the pod takes a cabin-size bag
  • Breakfast and mineral water included

Against

  • About 58 cm wide; you can lie or sit, but not stand
  • Shared toilets and washroom at the end of the corridor
  • Little view from the pod; no restaurant car
  • Dogs and other pets not allowed

How it scores

Five scores out of 10, weighted into the overall. How we score

Space 25% of score
2.0 out of 10
Back-on-Track measured the pod at 0.58 m wide and roughly one square metre, enough to lie down and sit up but little more. 12
Dining 20% of score
2.0 out of 10
Breakfast is a roll with jam and coffee, and Lonely Planet's reviewer found the on-board hot food underwhelming with no dining car. 34
Journey 20% of score
5.0 out of 10
A practical 14-hour overnight transfer, though Lonely Planet notes the pod window offers little view. 54
Comfort 15% of score
3.0 out of 10
The pod gives solo privacy, but toilets and washroom are shared at the end of the corridor, access to the pod is low, and Lonely Planet's reviewer slept only on and off. 214
Value 20% of score
6.0 out of 10
Fares in the couchette price range buy a private bed for one, though the experience is far from premium. 254
