The review

The pick of the new Nightjet for two travelling together: a private compartment with its own toilet and a proper shower cubicle, breakfast brought to the door and lounge access before departure. It is still a scheduled night train rather than a land cruise, with no restaurant car, so eat in Vienna or Hamburg first. There is only one of these compartments per train.

For

  • Separate shower cubicle, unlike the wet-room bathroom in the standard sleeper
  • À la carte breakfast served in the compartment
  • ÖBB lounge access, welcome drink and snack included
  • Arrives in central Hamburg in the morning, saving a hotel night and a flight

Against

  • Only one Comfort Plus compartment per train
  • Bunk beds, so one traveller climbs to the upper berth
  • No restaurant car and no evening meal

How it scores

Five scores out of 10, weighted into the overall. How we score

Space 25% of score
6.0 out of 10
Only one compartment per train, with a little more floor space than the standard sleeper, but still a two-bunk compartment rather than a suite. 12
Dining 20% of score
4.0 out of 10
A welcome drink and an à la carte breakfast in the compartment are included, but there is no restaurant car and no dinner service. 31
Journey 20% of score
5.0 out of 10
A practical 14-hour overnight transfer that runs mostly in the dark, and Seat61 advises allowing an hour for onward connections as Nightjets can run late. 41
Comfort 15% of score
7.0 out of 10
The only category with a separate shower cubicle, so the bathroom is a few steps from bed, though the upper berth needs a climb and step-free boarding is limited to the multi-function car. 152
Value 20% of score
8.0 out of 10
Third-party quotes put entry fares from €129 per person, a fraction of what dedicated luxury trains charge for a private en-suite compartment. 41
