The review

The standard choice for couples who want privacy and their own toilet without paying for the single Comfort Plus compartment. Seat61 calls these perhaps the best-designed sleeper compartments in Europe; the compromise is a wet-room shower that soaks the washroom floor when used. Breakfast and a welcome drink are included, but there is no restaurant car.

For

  • Toilet and shower inside the compartment
  • Breakfast chosen from a menu, plus welcome drink and lounge access
  • Can be booked for sole use by one traveller
  • Free Wi-Fi, wireless charging and key-card locking

Against

  • Shower is a wand over the toilet area, so the floor gets wet
  • Bunk beds, so one traveller climbs to the upper berth
  • No restaurant car and no evening meal

How it scores

Five scores out of 10, weighted into the overall. How we score

Space 25% of score
5.0 out of 10
A compact two-berth compartment with seating, one of nine per sleeping car, adequate for two but with little floor space once bags are in. 12
Dining 20% of score
4.0 out of 10
A welcome drink and an à la carte breakfast are included, but there is no restaurant car and no dinner service. 31
Journey 20% of score
5.0 out of 10
A practical 14-hour overnight transfer that runs mostly in the dark, and Seat61 advises allowing an hour for onward connections as Nightjets can run late. 41
Comfort 15% of score
6.0 out of 10
Having a toilet inside the compartment is a real advantage at night, but the shower turns the whole washroom into a wet room, the upper berth needs a climb and step-free boarding is limited to the multi-function car. 152
Value 20% of score
8.0 out of 10
Current quotes run from €99 to €107.40 per bed when shared, or €159 for sole use, very low for a private en-suite compartment compared with dedicated luxury trains. 14
