The review

SilverLeaf gives you the same route, the same daylight scenery and the same included food and drink as GoldLeaf, from a single-level glass-dome coach with meals served at your seat. It suits travellers who would rather avoid stairs, and it typically costs several hundred Canadian dollars less per person than GoldLeaf. What you give up is the upper-deck view, a separate dining room and the larger outdoor platform.

For

  • No stairs between your seat, the meal service and the washroom
  • Breakfast, lunch, snacks and alcoholic drinks are included on both days
  • Luggage is taken to the Kamloops hotel for you, so you only carry a day bag
  • Typically CAD 800–1,100 per person less than GoldLeaf on the same date

Against

  • Meals are eaten at your seat rather than in a dining room
  • Only a small outdoor viewing area between coaches
  • Long days, with no dinner on board and evening arrivals reported by reviewers
  • The Kamloops hotel is assigned for you and is a moderate three-star property

How it scores

Five scores out of 10, weighted into the overall. How we score

Space 25% of score
6.0 out of 10
Assigned reclining seats with reasonable legroom in a single-level dome coach, but you eat at the same seat and the outdoor area is a small space between coaches. 123
Dining 20% of score
6.0 out of 10
Hot breakfasts and lunches with a choice of dishes are served at your seat with drinks included, but the menu is narrower than GoldLeaf's and there is no dinner on board. 124
Journey 20% of score
7.5 out of 10
The Fraser Canyon, Hell's Gate, the Shuswap and the approach to Banff are all covered in daylight under glass, though the view is at window level rather than from an upper deck. 562
Comfort 15% of score
7.0 out of 10
Everything is on one level with no stairs, wheelchair users can be placed in coaches with tie-downs and an ADA washroom, and luggage goes ahead to the hotel, but the days are long and the Kamloops hotel is a moderate three-star. 7284
Value 20% of score
6.0 out of 10
About CAD 2,300–3,000 per person buys two daytime rail days with meals, drinks and one three-star hotel night, which is fair rather than cheap for a seat-based train. 92
